One day in New York City, a few years after I became a Kriyaban, Baba Hariharananda asked me to find a pen for him.
This pen was a unique pen, as it had four different colored inks and it would let you choose one of the colors by sliding down a small slider to select a color to write with.
The next day I went searching the stores in Manhattan for the pen that Baba had requested. Much to my surprise, I could not find this particular type of pen.
Not wanting to go back to Baba empty handed, I found an "orange pen with orange ink", thinking he might like this pen, as it was the color of the "sannyasi's clothes."
I presented Baba the "orange pen" and explained that I could not find the pen he requested, after searching in so many stores.
He started writing with the "orange pen" and commented, "Very nice pen".
Then he stopped and looked directly at me, "You go back to that store where you found this pen and look just to the left of where you found it, surely the pen I requested is there."
My stunned response, "Baba, how could it be there? I looked for it, and you have never been in this store, how could you know it is there?
It was the first time I had ever been in this store and I am sure he had never visited this particular store in midtown.
Baba responded, "I tell you Don Baba, you go back to that store and surely you will find the pen where I am telling you will find it."
Still stunned, With an extra long exclamation, I am saying "Baabaa" doubting that the pen would be there.
The next day, I went back to the store as directed, and exactly where he said the pen would be, there I found it.
It's a small example of Baba's omniscient ability, but when it happens to you personally, it leaves you with sense of awe and validation that Baba is an extra-ordinary person.
It really left an impression on me and it was reassuring to know that he was fully aware of my actions in the world, yet very compassionately and lovingly subtlety about how he watched over me.
Often I found that he would prefer you made your own decisions and would guide you from within, instead of telling you to do or not to do something. Baba would encourage students to seek the answers to their questions deep in meditation.
Many times he would say something, perhaps in a public lecture and you would ask yourself, "Why is Baba talking about this?"
The next day or even many years later, something would happen, you would suddenly feel Baba's "vibration" in the fontanel, and hear his voice inwardly, remembering that he had told you about what was happening.
Many Kriyabans have had this type of experience with Baba, when he had subtly told them about something in their life that would happen and then it happens.
