"Talk about Nirvikalpa Samadhi Baba"

One of the most powerful moments I experienced being in the presence of Baba Hariharananda was during his 95th birthday celebration at his ashram in Homestead, Florida.

It was his last birthday, May 27th 2002. 

At least 150 + Kriyabans from all over the world, had gathered in a large tent erected on the property behind the main residence.

Sitting on the stage next to Baba on his left side, I heard something I had never heard at a Kriya Yoga program.

"Talk about Nirvikalpa Samadhi  Baba" a western gentleman had shouted from the audience.

In the twenty years of attending Kriya Yoga programs, I had never heard anyone from the audience shouting a request, so it captured my immediate attention.

What left a strong impression on my mind was how Baba reacted to such a request.

Without hesitation, he looked at the person directly and said:

"You can get it, if you have the deepest desire."

Then he proceeded to show him how.

First he put his index finger under his nose, indicating "to take a very little breath", (the short breath Kriya Yoga technique which I had seen him teach for twenty years).

Then he touched his right and left eyes, then his right and left ears, then his right and left nostrils as he proceeded to indicate to perceive the "subtle vibration/pulsation pranic life force" in each of the different body parts. (the Kriya Yoga technique of perceiving the formless divine power in the whole physical body).

Then he touched the top of his head and smiled, reinforcing his message: "to calmly watch God in the Fontanel."

What I felt was remarkable was his immediate reaction, without hesitation, to help the person who had shouted.

Baba didn't roll up his eyes and say, "Oh you want me to talk about Nirvikalpa Samadhi ? "  in a sarcastic or indignant manner.

Baba also didn't say, "in the scriptures it says" or buy my book if you want to know.

He also didn't just ignore the person or pretend he didn't hear him shout.

Instead he immediately responded, with his deepest sincere love, and gave an honest effort to elevate and educate the person who had shouted.

Baba encouraged him, "You can get it, if you have the deepest desire" and then he practically showed him how by the practice of the Kriya Yoga techniques.
